New Year, New Mobility

M was in the body cast from October 22 to December 22. When it came off, the adventure of re-learning to walk began. He crawled for 3-4 days dragging the leg behind him. Then he began to move it without using it to push off when crawling. Then he was using his leg to help him crawl. The next step was standing holding on to things-- though still crawling to get from one place to another. Walking holding on to things was next, followed by taking one or two steps away from the safety and steadiness of things to hold. We were in the Detroit airport when he took his first truly free steps: he stood up from where he was playing and walked over to D (about 5 steps) without even thinking about it. He goes through setbacks for a few hours or up to a day and doesn't want to try. His leg gets sore and you can see that he thinks it is "hurt" again.

Through this experience M has (finally) gained a healthy cautious nature which was completely absent prior. M lost 10 pounds (a quarter of his weight). M has gained a fear of pain and doctors (the well check this week was a real party). D and I now fully understand how blessed we are to have three healthy children.

Here is a little M video to brighten your weekend. B
