Are You Ready???

Here you will find that my blog is not only fun, but also informative. This is your lesson on storm preparedness. Hoping all my friends and family in VA will not have to use it. All the gang here in WA can use this for wind storm season as well.
Tips appear as I remembered them, not in order of importance:
  • Turn your freezer to the lowest setting now. This gets it good and cold before the power goes out.
  • Buy/fill gallon jugs of water. Leave some expansion room and then freeze them. Frozen water helps keep the freezer/fridge cold longer and if your water gets shut off you will have water to use as it melts.
  • Charge all cell phones, flashlights, rechargeable batteries, etc. now.
  • Fill a bath tub or containers with water. I don't get this. I would not want to drink water out a bath tub, even boiled.
  • Locate flashlights and candles. From my personal experience with a hurricane I would also say buckets, tarps, and towels just in case your living room ceiling collapses during the storm.
  • Outside take light things (birdhouses, feeders, cushions, wind chimes) and put them inside. What could a wind chime hurt? Try hurling it at a window at 50 mph.
  • Outside things that are too heavy to move should be turned over to their least "blowy" position. (Yes, blowy is a technical term). Moving them away from windows couldn't hurt. We had a storm door that didn't latch well and propped the sand box against it so it would blow around or let water in.

When you head out to run errands here are 3 to think about:

  • Grocery: non perishable items. You are going to feel like a fool with a fridge full of milk and eggs when the power goes out. Snow storms are for milk and eggs. Hurricanes are for peanut butter and bread. Paper plates also helpful in case a clean-up party or clean-out- the-freezer before it spoils party breaks out.
  • Gas station: you'll need it for the generator, chainsaw, or maybe the car. Even if you don't lose power, your gas station might.
  • Library: grab some good books. They can be used whether the storm hits or not.

One last note would be for the whole gang back in Wyndham: Call Tom Hall and have him put up the dome.

love and hugs and a request for Hurricane Earl: please let D out of Richmond before you hit,

B
