Yeah. That about sums it up. I don't get it. We got up Sunday morning and D had a bee in his bonnet about going somewhere. So we hopped a train and headed to Portland with no idea what to do when we got there.
On the walk from train station to hotel we found what a theme for the weekend would be: homeless people and how to teach your kids about them. Here are a sampling of subjects we covered in 2 days. Why are they homeless? What do they eat? Where do they work? Why do they beg? Why won't you give them money? What is drugs? Why is that man screaming? Why is his face painted blue and why does he keep staring at me? What is that funny thing they are smoking? Why are all these people sleeping in the park? Wow, who would have thought this
would be such an educational journey.
After checking in at the hotel we walked to the waterfront. Then through downtown to where a LEGO exhibit was in for the weekend and through Chinatown.
Back to the hotel for a snack and some swimming. We watched Toy Story 3 and ate pizza and stayed up late. I have to vote this part as the best part of the weekend. Toy Story 3 was terrific as was the room service pizza. 4 of 5 of us cried at the end of the movie.
Monday started with breakfast buffet at the hotel, coffee for D at Stumptown Coffee, a walk to Powells Bookstore, and walking around the shopping area of downtown. Checked out of the hotel and then wandered around until train time. I wanted to hit VooDoo Donuts, but the line was outrageous. And it stayed outrageous the whole time we were there. That's what being on the Food Network does for you.
I wasn't enchanted with Portland. In fact it is added to my list of places that I don't really ever feel the need to visit again. It was nice to spend time with D though and hope he can come back soon to do something fun. Not Portland.
love and hugs and from now on when people tell me they lived in Portland for a while I do have to say that in the back of my mind I will think "Wow, you were homeless drug addict?!?" B

I don't get it either...not my favorite city. Even our oldest son and his wife were not impressed!
